Kharagpur, West Bengal : South Eastern Railway's Kharagpur Division observed World Environment Day 2026 in a befitting manner with a series of awareness programmes and environmental conservation activities centred on this year's theme of Climate Change. The culmination event of the World Environment Day Campaign–2026 was organized today at SERSA Stadium, Kharagpur. The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from railway officers, members of SERWWO, Scouts & Guides, Railway Protection Force personnel, railway employees and their family members.
On the occasion, Lalit Mohan Pandey, Divisional Railway Manager, Kharagpur, administered an Environment Conservation Pledge to all participants, reaffirming their commitment towards protecting the environment and adopting sustainable practices in their daily lives. A Nukkad Natak based on the theme of Climate Change was also presented, highlighting the urgent need for collective action to address environmental challenges and promote sustainable development.
To spread the message of environmental responsibility among the public, DRM Kharagpur flagged off an awareness rally from SERSA Stadium to Golf Ground, Kharagpur with the message: "Together, let's build a cleaner, greener and sustainable future." The rally was joined by DRM Kharagpur along with both the Additional Divisional Railway Managers, branch officers, members of SERWWO, Scouts & Guides, RPF personnel, railway staff and their family members.
Participants carried placards and banners promoting environmental conservation, climate action and sustainable lifestyles. A tree plantation drive was also undertaken around the SERSA Stadium premises to enhance green cover and promote ecological sustainability. Subsequently, a massive plantation programme under the nationwide initiative "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" was organized at Golf Ground, Kharagpur, where nearly 200 saplings of fruit-bearing and flowering trees were planted by officers, staff and their family members.
The initiative aimed to combine environmental stewardship with a heartfelt tribute to mothers, encouraging every individual to plant and nurture a tree in their mother's name. The "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" plantation campaign was simultaneously carried out across various stations of Kharagpur Division, where station staff actively participated in tree plantation drives to spread the message of environmental conservation and climate responsibility among rail users and local communities.
